Sum Travel Tips

Updated: Dec 30, 2024

I have been travelling for so long now. Quite frankly traveling is the second thing I learnt after walking. I am thankful that travel is a large factor of my journey and I would love to share

5 loving travel tips with you!

1] Ask strangers for place or food recommendations.

  • You can ask anyone about what it is you are curious about. Asking people around you is a beautiful way to adjust to where you are and also a way to interact with local people around you. By asking locals for direction, you will be guided to places where you can learn more about the essence of who you are and the essence of the place. The person who you feel like asking will most likely be the one you need to ask. So just do it, even in fear!!!

  • If you experience a “no” then breathe it out and keep walking. Does the person know you? Does the person have to talk to you? Does the person have other things to do? When discovering new spaces, being conscious of your surroundings is important, alongside avoiding personalising all actions. Move with kindness and openness. There are people who will embrace you for who you are, no doubt!

2] Learn words and phases of the language.

  • At least one word. Knowing how locals communicate will allow you to connect with people around you. This will boost your confidence and encourage a open heart. Voice is not all. You can show respect in other ways too, however language can show those around you your willingness to learn and your appreciation.

  • When you do not understand avoid closing yourself out, keep following your curiosity even if bodily communication is what inspires you. The opposite of intimidation is inspiration. No one is judging you for learning besides you self.

3] Public transportation [which should be free for all]

  • The most efficient, affordable and sustainable way to tour cities are via public transportation systems. Trains, trams, metros, buses, city bikes or scooters you will encourage you to be a part of the city flow and visit places beyond a city. You will see more than you can imagine. The first few times may be hectic, but remember you can always ask for directions and there will always be someone willing to help.

4] Travel with a reusable bottle.

Many countries have drinkable water, water dispensers or placed drinkable water taps. You can also find water dispensers in offices, hotels and some restaurants. Some spare water is always important to have! In terms of reducing waste, purchasing paper bottles, recyclable bottles, glass bottles or support local businesses!

5] Support local businesses [major key]

  • I cannot highlight how important this point is. When people are eating there you can eat there too. You will not automatically get diarrhoea for trying something new. Sometimes our body takes time to adjust it is normal; travel with some charcoal tablets and you will be good to go! Food is one of the most genuine ways to connect with communities. To connect with the story of a place. To connect with creatives.

  • Avoid visiting franchise fast food places as fast food restaurants are distractions and more harmful than we think. There are even more affordable and delicious options and you will support families.

The few travel tips I have listed have been of great guidance for me when exploring new countries especially when travelling solo. We tend to gravitate towards concepts we are familiar with and doing so may hinder you getting to know the expression of a place. When you travel with personal curiosity, finding new spaces can be much more fulfilling and enjoyable!

To each their own,
